The double-sided banner was specially made for Nottingham City Council and was hung outside the city's Council House for a civic tribute. It features a picture of Cloughie alongside one of his famous quotes referring to the fact he was overlooked for the England manager's job despite being the people's choice.
The quote reads: "I'm sure England selectors thought if they took me on and gave me the job, I'd want to run the show. They were shrewd because that's exactly what I would have done."
The successful bidder was Nottingham-based businessman Phil Randall, who was presented with the banner. Said Phil: "I'm absolutely delighted to have this special banner which I hope to display in the office." The proceeds of the auction went to the Brian Clough Statue Fund in Nottingham. The banner has been kindly donated to the fund's committee by the city council, which supported and administered the fund.
One of the fund's committee members, Rich Fisher said: "This banner is a rare piece of Cloughie history. Only a few were made for the civic tribute and this is the only one of its size which features this quote." The week-long auction on eBay closed on Wednesday October 19th, 2005
A number of banners were auctioned off to help the fund, with each one featuring a great Cloughie quote. The first banner alone raised nearly £1,000. The statue fund comprised of a small group of volunteers who worked tirelessly to raise the money for the stunning statue which was unveiled in November 2008 by Mrs Clough in front of thousands of fans.
